Over 300 dealmakers from around South Yorkshire descended on the Hotel Mercure St Paul’s in Sheffield in June 2008 to see Patrick Abel of PKF’s Sheffield office crowned Dealmaker of the Year in the second Insider South Yorkshire Dealmakers Awards. The event, compèred by Chris Barrie of Red Dward and Brittas Empire fame, also saw the management buyout as ESS named Deal of the Year. Andrew Coombe, who retired in April from Keeble Hawson solicitors after spending 21 years leading its corporate department, won the Lifetime Achievement Award, a gong that, like all the others, was voted on by industry insiders. DLA Piper was named both Dealmaking Firm of the Year and Corporate Law Firm of the Year; Bank of Scotland followed last year’s success by winning Corporate Bank of the Year again; and Barber Harrison & Platt was named Corporate Advisory Firm of the Year.
